"So now you're telling me that you didn't see Isaac and his father arguing before the murder?"
This was the thing Jackson had to do for Isaac. Get to the sheriff's office and retract his statement about seeing Isaac, so he wouldn't be a prime suspect anymore and could walk around freely. And Jackson hated every second of this.
"Not... exactly."
"Not exactly," Sheriff Stilinski asked, "or no? Because when it comes to the law, there's a fairly large divide between not exactly and no. Like, if "not exactly" were sitting in this chair, then "no" would be somewhere in the middle of the pacific ocean, drowning next to my career!" He looked pretty frustrated with this whole thing. Jackson felt like fidgeting, but didn't. "So what's it gonna be, huh? Not exactly or no?"
Jackson let out a breath. He just didn't want to deal with Isaac and anything resembling last night's poisoning shenanigans again. "No."
"... Ah, crap."
-----
A little later after disappointing Stiles's old man, Jackson headed down to the school to meet up with Danny, who he caught up with by the lockers. "It took forever," Danny said, "but I found a program that can recover your video. I'll run it in my free period this afternoon."
Ugh, even more waiting. For once, though, Jackson didn't show off his frustrations too bad. He could always go to the gym again. You know. Because that had gone so well for him last night. "Yeah," he said, "just let me know when it's done."
Then Danny had to be off to class. Jackson was just starting towards the gym when he was stopped in his tracks by a clinging sound that made his ears hurt. Erica's bracelets, not that he knew that. She'd just walked past him. It was happening again, sound becoming louder in his ears. Erica and Isaac were a bit further down the hall, and there was background noise, and they weren't talking loudly, and he could still hear them. Somewhat. Stray words.
"Chemistry."
"Lydia."
"Test her."
And then just one unfamiliar word: "Kanima."
And then the bell rang and Jackson had to cover his ears because the sound was painfully loud. He recovered quickly, though. Quickly enough that he caught Stiles and Scott before they'd made it to class. He had questions. "Hey, testicle left and right." It would've been hilarious under different circumstances that McCall and Stiles actually knew that meant them. But Jackson wasn't feeling funny right now. "What the hell is a kanima?"
That was enough to get their attention. They both spun around to face him. "How do you know about the kanima?" Scott asked. For once asking the smart questions. So Jackson told them. About hearing Isaac and Erica, and then as an added bonus, about last night as well. He wasn't stupid enough not to know the two things were connected. They'd tested him to see if he was this kanima thing. By paralyzing him.
"Paralyzed from the neck down," he bitched. "Do you have any idea what that feels like?"
Stiles looked uncomfortable. "I'm familiar with the sensation."
"Wait," Scott said. "Why would Derek test you? Why would he think that it's you?"
"How should I know?"
"Wait, do they think it's Lydia?" Stiles asked, showing off his priorities.
"I don't know," Jackson said, "all I heard was her name and something about chemistry."
Scott pointed out that was going to be next period. He clearly wanted to ask Jackson more things, but then Finstock was there and booming about Scott and Stiles needing to go to class, and something about an impossible midterm. Jackson let them go.
He wasn't sure how he felt about any of this.
